GCSE Religious Studies (Ethics and Philosophy)

Students will study:
Component 1: Religious, Philosophical and Ethical Studies (50% of the
course)
Theme 1: Issues of Relationships
Concepts studied: adultery, divorce, cohabitation, commitment, contraception,
gender equality, responsibility and roles.
Theme 2: Issues of Life and Death
Concepts studied: afterlife, environmental sustainability, euthanasia, evolution,
abortion, quality of life, sanctity of life, the soul.
Theme 3: Issues of Good and Evil
Concepts studied: good, evil, forgiveness, free will, justice, morality, punishment,
sin, suffering.
Theme 4: Issues of Human Rights.
Concepts studied: censorship, discrimination, extremism, human rights, personal
conviction, prejudice, relative poverty, absolute poverty, social justice.
We will consider both religious and non-religious views about the issues we will
study.
Component 2: Christianity (25% of the course)
If there is a God, what is God like?
How is God9s omnipotence shown through the Creation story?
What is the importance of Jesus for Christians?
Did Jesus save the world?
Is there life after death? If there is, what is this like?
Component 3: Islam (25% of the course)
Allah, Risalah (Prophethood), The Akhirah (Afterlife), Foundations of faith, The
Five Pillars of Sunni Islam, Ten Obligatory Acts of Shi9a Islam, Muslim practices,
Jihad, Festivals.
Examination
Information
Students will develop skills in; literacy, critical thinking, analysis and evaluation
across the course. Whilst doing this they will consider the importance and
significance of religion for the life of a believer, and the impact religion has on the
whole world.
Component 1: Religious, Philosophical and Ethical Studies (50% of the course).
2hr written examination.
Component 2: Christianity (25% of the course) 1 hour written examination.
Component 3: Islam (25% of the course) 1 hour written examination.
All to be taken at the end of Summer 2027.
