Level 1 / 2 Cambridge National Certificate in Child Development

The Cambridge National in Child Development qualification will encourage students
to understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of a Child's
Development from conception to 5 years. Students will develop learning and practical
skills that can be applied to real-life contexts and work situations.
The Level 1 & 2 Cambridge National Certificate in Child Development is recognised as
an equivalent to a GCSE qualification. As such, it counts as one of the statutory
number of GCSEs required to study at Further Education and/or sixth form colleges.
This course is for students who wish to develop applied knowledge and practical
skills in child development. It is particularly relevant for students wishing to study
child centred courses, post 16.
Students will develop knowledge and an understanding of the overall needs of young
children and the social and environmental influences that affect their social,
emotional, physical and intellectual development in a changing and multicultural
society. It is a practical and a theoretical course where the principles learned are
applied to the study of a child9s development. Study will focus on the following areas:
Reproduction, Parental responsibility, Antenatal care, Birth, Postnatal checks and
care, Conditions for development, Childhood illnesses, Child safety and equipment,
Nutrition in relation to childhood diet, Health and hygiene
Students are usually given the opportunity to spend time observing children at local
nurseries which helps reinforce theoretical learning.
Examination
Information
The course is divided into three units:
Students must complete all three units:
R057: Health and well-being for child development
This unit is assessed by formal written examination and is 40% of the overall
qualification.
R058: Create a safe environment and understand the nutritional needs of children
from birth to five years.
This unit is assessed by NEA (Non Examined Assessment) produced in the classroom
under controlled conditions and is 30% of the overall qualification.
R059: Understand the development of a child from one to five years

This unit is assessed by NEA (Non Examined Assessment) produced in the classroom
under controlled conditions and is 30% of the overall qualification.
All students will start on the same programme, with their final mark determining
which award they achieve: Level 1 or Level 2.
There are seven grades to achieve 3 Pass, Merit and Distinction at Level 1
Pass, Merit, Distinction and Distinction* at Level 2.
Level Two Pass (L2P) is equivalent to a Grade 4 at GCSE.
One written examination 40%
Two NEAs internally assessed and externally moderated both worth 30%. The NEA
titles are set by the exam board.
